Study Guide & Key Facts

Test format, speed limits, alcohol limits, demerit points, stopping distances, right-of-way and parking rules — the facts you must know for BTT, FTT, RTT and Japan written tests.

What this guide is for

This page is a revision sheet, not a replacement for the official handbook. We gathered the numbers that come up again and again in practice: urban speed limits, school zones, drink-drive limits, and how many demerit points suspend a new licence.

If you are a Myanmar worker in Singapore, start with the Singapore block. Built-up roads default to 50 km/h unless a sign says otherwise. Expressways are typically 90 km/h. School zones drop to 40 km/h on school days. Mixing these three is one of the most common BTT errors we see in lesson mode.

If you are preparing for Japan’s written test, the Japan block lists 法定速度 and 点数 in the same layout so you can compare. Do not memorise Singapore numbers for a Japan exam — the systems are different.

After you read a section, open the matching lesson set and answer ten questions immediately. Reading without answering does not stick. TheoryLane explanations are original wording for learners; confirm fees and legal limits with the authority before you book.

Stopping Distances (dry road)

SpeedThinking (14–15 m/s)BrakingTotal
50 km/h~14 m~14 m~28 m
70 km/h~19 m~28 m~47 m
90 km/h~25 m~46 m~71 m
Note: Double these distances on wet roads. Always maintain a 2-second following gap in normal conditions.

Right of Way & Junctions

  • At uncontrolled junctions: yield to traffic from the right.
  • At T-junctions: through-traffic and traffic on the major road have priority.
  • When turning right: give way to oncoming traffic going straight or turning left.
  • At roundabouts: give way to traffic already on the roundabout (approach from the right).
  • When merging: traffic already on the main road has priority — match speed and find a safe gap.
  • Emergency vehicles (police, fire, ambulance) with lights/siren: pull left and stop.

Expressway & Tunnel Rules

  • Minimum speed on expressways is typically 60 km/h — do not obstruct faster traffic.
  • Keep left on expressways; use the right lane only for overtaking.
  • Do not stop, reverse or make U-turns on expressways except in emergencies.
  • Switch on headlights when entering tunnels — even in daylight.
  • If you break down: move to the emergency lane, switch on hazard lights, exit vehicle if safe.
  • Bus lanes and yellow box junctions: do not enter unless your exit is clear.
Note: Obstructing an emergency lane or stopping on an expressway is a serious offence with heavy demerit points.

Crossings, Yellow Box & Parking

  • Yellow box junction: enter only if you can clear the box without blocking crossing traffic.
  • Zig-zag lines near pedestrian crossings: no stopping or parking — keeps sight lines clear.
  • Silver zones (signed): extra care for elderly pedestrians — often lower speed limits apply.
  • Double yellow lines: no parking at any time. Single yellow: no parking during signed hours.
  • At bus stops: do not park within 9 m of the bus stop sign (towards the next bus stop).
  • School zone flashes: 40 km/h when amber lights are operating on school days.

Key Rules to Know

  • Seat belts are compulsory for ALL occupants — front and rear.
  • Mobile phone use while driving: illegal unless on hands-free.
  • Children under 1.35 m must use an approved child restraint.
  • Minimum following distance: 2 seconds in normal conditions (4 seconds in rain).
  • Flashing amber at a pedestrian crossing — must yield to pedestrians.
  • At a stop line with a red light or STOP sign — wheels must stop completely.
  • Lane discipline: keep left unless overtaking.
  • Motorcyclists must wear an approved helmet at all times.
  • Do not drive in bus lanes during restricted hours unless you are a bus or authorised vehicle.
  • Give way to pedestrians at signalised crossings when the green man is showing.
  • U-turn only where permitted by signs or road markings — never at traffic lights unless signed.
  • Hazard perception (FTT): identify developing hazards early — the test uses video clips.

Stopping Distances (dry road / 乾燥路)

30 km/h~7 m~6 m~13 m
60 km/h~14 m~24 m~38 m
100 km/h~23 m~66 m~89 m
Note: Wet or icy roads can double stopping distance. In residential zones (30 km/h), 徐行 (joko) means slow enough to stop within 1 metre at any time.

Key Rules to Know (重要事項)

  • 徐行 (joko) means slow to a speed where you can stop within 1 metre at any time.
  • At unmarked intersections, yield to vehicles approaching from the right.
  • Seat belts: compulsory for all seats. Child seats required for children under 6.
  • Mobile phone use: illegal while driving — even stopping at a red light.
  • Left turn: cyclists and pedestrians have priority; check mirrors and blind spots.
  • Horn use: only allowed in emergencies or at designated horn-use zones (警笛鳴らせ).
  • Headlights must be on in tunnels and at night — even if street lighting is present.
  • Right of way at intersections: broad road > narrow road; otherwise yield to the right.
  • Stop completely at stop signs (一時停止) and check left and right before proceeding.
  • No overtaking near pedestrian crossings, intersections, or on curves/hills where visibility is limited.
  • Expressway minimum speed is typically 50 km/h — do not drive too slowly and block traffic.
  • Temporary provisional licence (仮免): must display the 仮 mark and be accompanied by a licensed instructor or holder over 3 years.
